Connect the modem to the computer, the mains socket, and the telephone line, following the modem manufacturer's instructions (if it is an internal modem, then install it and connect to the telephone line, again following the manufacturer's instructions).

Switch on your computer, and start Windows 95.

Click on the START button, then select SETTINGS and CONTROL PANEL.

Double click on the MODEMS icon. Follow the on screen prompts to make Windows 95 automatically detect your newly installed modem. When the detection process has finished, note down the modem type, and the port to which it is connected (see below).

Finally, enter your telephone numbers etc. when prompted, and then click FINISH when you are satisfied that all is correct.

Close the control panel window.

4. Connecting to Pavilion Internet

Your Pavilion Internet connection is now set up and ready to use. You now need to install the Internet software such as Internet Explorer and Outlook Express to allow you to use the service. This is explained in a separate booklet entitled Getting Started that will have been supplied with your Pavilion Internet software. However, we will first make a trial connection, and configure your user details.

Click on START followed by PROGRAMS, then ACCESSORIES then DIAL-UP NETWORKING. Now double click the PAVILION INTERNET icon. You will be presented with the screen shown in the photo.

[Connect To]

In the USER NAME box, type your Pavilion user name EXACTLY as it appears on your letter from Pavilion (the user name must be in lower case as it appears). In the PASSWORD box, type your password EXACTLY as it appears on your letter from Pavilion (again the password is case-sensitive). If you do not wish to be asked for this password every time you connect, click on the SAVE PASSWORD box. Once this is done, click CONNECT.

If all has gone well, after about 20 seconds you will be presented with the screen shown below. This is a successful connection, and will allow any of the Internet programs you are about to install work correctly. For now click DISCONNECT, this will terminate your internet connection. Now install the Pavilion Internet software if you have not already done so.

You should now be able to connect to Pavilion Internet using the Windows 95 dialler. If you do have problems please call Pavilion Internet Technical Support on 0845 3333 999, or email the helpline on support@pavilion.net
